What Taxpayers Need to Know About 1040 Schedule 1-A (2025–2027)

Quick guide to Schedule 1‑A and new below‑the‑line deductions

Beginning in 2025 taxpayers can claim several new below‑the‑line deductions on a new Form 1040 Schedule 1‑A. These provisions — including deductions for qualified cash tips, qualified overtime, and certain vehicle loan interest — change reporting and tax planning for many wage earners and retirees.

Five concise answers for tax planning

  • 1. Purpose of the form: Schedule 1‑A collects the new below‑the‑line deductions created by the OBBBA (2025–2028), standardizing reporting for tip, overtime and certain vehicle interest deductions and the senior deduction so preparers can calculate final tax liability.
  • 2. Eligible below‑the‑line deductions: Qualified cash tips (up to $25,000 per return), qualified overtime (up to $12,500 single; $25,000 MFJ), and vehicle loan interest (up to $10,000 per taxpayer for qualifying U.S.‑assembled personal vehicles) when statutory requirements are met.
  • 3. Impact on AGI: These items are below the line and do not reduce AGI. They lower taxable income or tax liability after AGI is computed and are reported on Schedule 1‑A, not on lines that affect AGI.
  • 4. Who should file: File Schedule 1‑A if you claim any of these deductions — tip workers whose employers report tips, overtime earners with qualifying excess pay, purchasers of qualifying vehicles, or seniors claiming the senior deduction — regardless of whether you itemize or take the standard deduction.
  • 5. How to attach to Form 1040: Complete Schedule 1‑A and attach it to your Form 1040. Employers will report qualifying tips and (from 2026) qualified overtime on the W‑2; include required supporting data such as the vehicle VIN when claiming the vehicle interest deduction.
